If you have travelled from abroad to the island of Skiathos you are surely familiar with the very short runway the airport has. We have included Skiathos airport as one of the Best View Points Skiathos, because throughout the years landings & takeoffs have become a very popular attraction. People love to go and video a very close up experience of a landing of a plane coming in or taking off, because the planes pass by so close it almost seems like you could touch them! It has been said that Skiathos’ runway is the second shortest in the world after St. Martins (Caribbean). Quite an experience! The planes literally fly past spectators sitting on the little beach close by the runway, and cars that pass by on the main road.
This is definitely the place to sit and unwind with a chilled coffee or cocktail at hand day or night. The Bourtzi peninsula of Skiathos is an evergreen setting which provides a nice getaway from the burning sun under the fresh air and precious shade of the pine tress surrounding it. In the old days Bourtzi peninsula was a fort which was established by the Gizi brothers who occupied Skiathos in 1207. In the past there was a small church of St. George probably built by the two brothers. Ever since some ruins can still be found around it as well as the old walls. In 1906 a primary school was built which has later been converted into a cultural center.
At Platanos café you will enjoy a homemade coffee/lunch by real Skiathians, with the best ever view for panoramic photos at the top of Skiathos. From here you will be able to capture shots stretching out to the beautiful Tsougria island as well as Arkos and Skopelos island in the distance. Make sure you visit in the morning, lunch time, or just before sunset to make the most of it. It really is worth the drive up there.
Kastro = castle in Greek. Kastro is situated at the northernmost tip of Skiathos island and is surrounded by steep cliffs. It was the main settlement of Skiathos from mid 14th century till 1829. Ever since it has been abandoned but remains a protected site. The breathtaking views of Kastro will leave you astounded, you will be able to look over Lalaria, and all the way out to Skopelos island. This is a definitely one of the Things to do in Skiathos, while being here on holiday.
